Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20

Looking at how Canon and Nikon's cameras are selling now, we could be forgiven for forgetting that the first digital Canon and Nikon branded cameras were created by Kodak welding the digital electronics onto top-of-the-line bodies. Most of the digital camera companies that have made good digital …

Canon EOS 20D

Fast and the furious is the pace of progress. Nikon launches the 100D entry-level camera, Canon attacks head-on with the EOS 10D and undercuts it at the same time with the EOS 300D. Nikon comes back with the D70, a technical update to the D100 in a cheaper body and at the EOS 300D's price point.…

Creo Leaf Aptus 22

Creo has announced the latest Leaf backs: the Aptus 22 (48x36mm) and Aptus 17 (43.2x31.7mm). The backs support a 12 f-stop range in 16-bit per channel, and can record in 50 frames a minute. Rather than choosing between connected storage like in its Valeo 22 or smaller flash memory like in the recent Phase One P-series, the Aptus 22 supports either a 20GB digital magazine or type two compact flash cards.

Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c

Kodak hadn't released a camera for Canon lenses since the DCS 500 series last century. The Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c is not, itself, a Canon body, but is similar to Sigma's SD-lineup (Sigma is a licensee of Canon's lens mounts and protocol). The DCS Pro SLR/c is the Canon partner to Kodak's recent DCS P…

Phase One P25

We covered Creo/Leaf last year when we talked about medium format. At the time, Leaf had released a new back which could be used untethered from a personal computer—although it still required a PDA or palm computer to be attached for some elements. We mentioned in passing the day before that the Hasselblad H1 would ship with backs from two different providers, Kodak—who announced this year that they've stopped making medium format backs—and Phase One. Phase One has quite of experience creating medium format backs as well, and they've recently released their new P25 and P20 backs which are entirely contained backs (i.e. they don't need an iPaq attached like the Leaf Valeo does). Unlike the Leaf Valeo, it takes removable compact flash memory rather than connecting to external hard drives; if you need to infinite storage this provides additional flexibility. The 22MP almost 6x4.5cm P25 goes or about $30k while the smaller, rectangular, and 16MP P20 is about $17k.

Epson R-D1

The Epson R-D1 is another departure from our usual delve into 35mm-esque single lens reflective cameras. Instead of the rush for more-more-more: more auto-focus points, more megapixels, more complexity; the R-D1 is a meditation on less.…

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1

We like powerful, high quality, and fully controllable cameras. We like the Nikon D2H and the Canon EOS-1Ds. We like the Olympus Camedia E-20 and of course the Hasselblad H1. Sometimes it's just not practical to lug these around, or you don't have the time to unpack a full system. You need a cam…
