Pentax recently released a new medium-format camera, the Pentax 645D, but the market for a larger, slow, low-ISO-optimized medium-format camera is so different from a 35mm-esque SLR, it would be proper to refer to the K20D-succeeding K7 as the current Pentax flagship SLR. Flagship cameras of "the r…

The first mirrorless interchangeable camera was Panasonic's G-1, essentially a miniature digital SLR in form. The subsequent Micro Four Thirds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic eschewed this shape for a slim-pocketable style. Samsung has decided to follow the same progression, releasing their follow-up to the NX10—the $600 NX100—as a camera similar in shape to Panasonic's subsequent GF-1.

Sony's SLT-A55 is not a NEX camera, and while it uses either a Konica Minolta AF or Sony A mount, it does not feel entirely like a Sony Alpha either. This is because the SLT-A55 (and its little brother the SLT-A33) have kept the mirror but forgone the reflex (this is similar to what the Olympus Cam…

Casio released their first underwater camera just after our last muster. Joining them as new additions to our muster this year are Sony and Samsung. In addition to watproof ratings, most lines now sport shockproof and freezeproof ratings as well (so-called "rugged" cameras). The exception in our …

Sony has managed to squeeze an APS-C sensor into a camera smaller than the smallest Micro Four Thirds camera so far. At the same time, Sony has devised the new E-mount for these bodies to attach to comparatively massive lenses. Sony has announced a fast, wide-angle 16mm (24mm equiv.) f/2.8 pancake lens and a super-zoom 18-200mm (27mm-300mm equivalent) f3.5-5.6 with image stabilization, as the NEX cameras forgo Sony's normal in-body image stabilization. Sony has also deviced a fish-eye adapter and ultra-wide (20mm equiv) that attaches to the pancake lens. For users that find both the lens line-up and camera too-small, Sony is releasing an adapter for its existing Alpha lenses.

Samsung has been co-developing SLRs with Pentax for the past few years, with both companies selling them under their own brand. Samsung has now decided to go-it-alone with their foray into mirror-less interchangeables with the NX10, a $700 APS-C sensor-sized camera. The NX10 forgoes the Micro Four…

A $10,000 medium format digital camera—both imaging back and body—is a remarkable achievement when you consider that medium format backs often cost two or three times that amount. It's an achievement on par with the Nikon D1 undercutting Kodak's flagship, a heralding of a new guard. Neverthele…

Sony's ultracompact DSC-TX5 is a great JPEG-only pocket camera whether you are hitting the town, the beach, or the slopes. The 10MP cameras has a 28mm-112mm (equivalent) zoom range and is waterproof (10ft for an hour), freezeproof (14°F or -10°C), and designed to withstand drops from five feet. In a nod towards civility, it also takes standard SD/SDHC cards [but not SDXC].
