Kodak's mobile version in the DCS 700 line, the Kodak DCS 720x, comes with an interesting set of features that keeps the Kodak X20 models in the hands of their adherents. They remain the only models with the ability to directly connect to cellular phones when necessary to transfer files from the field, and add to that the ability to connect via wireless Ethernet. The DCS 720x also supports ISO 4000 and 5 fps for up to 25 shots. The DCS 720x is $7,000 and still only has a 2MP CCD which is unlikely to turn heads of anyone new to the game; but for those that need ISO 4000, large shot buffers, and a host of connectivity features it's the only one playing.

When Kodak looked at its product road map five years ago (when the DCS 460 was released), three years ago (when they were adapting the DCS 560 for the Nikon F5), and even two years ago when they released the DCS 660 the Kodak DCS 760 was likely seen as another iteration along its high-end, high-reso…

When Nikon introduced its own-branded D1 camera last year it was a wake-up call for photographers. At $5,500 it introduced a solid, manageable professional camera at half the price of the offerings by Kodak. The D1 introduced a 2.1MP sensor shooting at 4.5 frames-per-second which brought a digital…
