For years, Kodak has released a slower, higher resolution "60" camera and a faster, lower resolution "20" camera. Nikon launched the D1X and the D1H to compete with the respective Kodak models. Less than a year ago, Canon came to us and said we no longer had to choose, the top-of-the-line Canon EO…

Hot on the heals of Canon's returning CMOS sensor, Sigma has released its SD9 which—attractively priced at $1,799—comes with Foveon's X3 CMOS imaging sensor. Mechanically, the SD9 does not provide anything that the Canon D60 or Nikon D100 does; it's minimum shutter speed is 1/6000s, x-sync is 1…

It has a fixed, slightly wide (35mm) and moderate image quality; but then that's not where this camera's trying to compete.

The Contax N Digital sounded great when it was announced some eighteen months ago: a full-frame 35mm sized 6MP CCD for $7,000 from a big-name camera company at a time where Kodak was the only shop in town, but Nikon's D1 was just around the bend. Now, it has to complete not only with the Nikon D1 b…
